Abstract : Abstract Cyanine dyes are unique in their structure in that they have two nitrogen containing heterocycles moieties connected via conjugated methine groups. One moiety is quaternary ammonium salt acts as the electron acceptor and the other is tertiary amine containing heterocycle acts as the electron donor. This structural feature allows delocalization of electrons via the conjugated system with the property of high molar extinction coefficient. It was envisioned that having monomethine, dimethine and zeromethin cyanine dyes based on benthozthizole and picoline would furnish new dyes of optical interest amenable in sensing applications. Thus, different heterocyclic quaternary ammonium salts derived from 2-methylquinoline, 4-methylquinoline ,2-methylbenzothiazole and 4-methylpyridine have been synthesized and characterized. These heterocyclic salts were used for the synthesis of monomethine, dimethin and zeromethine cyanine dyes. The dyes obtained were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, mass, FTIR, UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy.
