Abstract : Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) radar has gained tremendous attention in the past decades due to the fact that it offers additional degrees of freedom and performance improvement compared to the conventional single antenna radar systems. Waveform optimization in MIMO radar is crucial as it can provide excellent improvement in the target detection by minimizing the symbol error rate (SER) and by enhancing the probability of detection. In this thesis, we develop novel method for joint optimization of transmitter and receiver waveforms in MIMO colocated radar. The proposed method is blind in the sense that it does not require any knowledge of the instantaneous target states. First, we derive the closed form expression for the probability of outage in the presence of unknown target and clutter. For this purpose, we formulate the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) in the form of the ratio of indefinite quadratic forms. Next, we employ the approach of characterizing the probability of the ratio of indefinite quadratic forms to obtain the expression for the probability of outage. Second, we design constrained optimization algorithms using the state of the art methods such as interior-point, sequential-quadratic programming (SQP) and SQP-legacy to jointly optimize the transmitter and receiver waveforms. We provide extensive simulations to validate our theoretical derivations. Finally, we compared the performance of the proposed algorithm with the existing state of the art techniques.
