Abstract : Aim: to study the frequency of root canal types in mandibular first molars both clinically and radiographically Materials and Methods: one hundred mandibular first molars were endodontically treated clinically. Patients’ age ranged from 10 to 35 years. In this study mesial roots of mandibular first molars in view of the recognized discrepancies in the literature concerning canal type of this tooth. Canal types were studied clinically and radiographically using the shift technique. Results and Conclusions: mesial canals were found to have two canal types namely type II in 48% of the cases and type III in 52% of the cases. For those cases diagnosed as having type II canal configuration a method for preserving the integrity of apical foramen was presented.
