Abstract : This study investigates metaphor in some verses of the Glorious Qur’an. This research is anchored by Conceptual Metaphor Theory, a theoretical framework originated by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. This study consists of six chapters. The structure of this dissertation is presented as follows: the first chapter highlights the main objectives of this study and the research questions. Next, it introduces the procedures for analyzing metaphor and explains how the data was collected. The second chapter presents the theoretical preliminaries of metaphor in English and Arabic. It introduces various definitions, functions and types of metaphor in general. Afterwards, it compares between metaphor and other figurative devices, such as simile and metonymy. The last section of this chapter presents a review of relevant studies carried out on English and Arabic metaphor. The third chapter provides an insight into Conceptual Metaphor Theory. It explains what this theory is all about and presents functions, types and features of conceptual metaphor. This chapter ends with an elaboration on key tenets related to this theory, such as metaphorical entailments and image schemata. The fourth chapter is devoted to the Glorious Qur’an. It sheds light on how this Holy Book was revealed, organized and compiled. It also addresses some of the major themes discussed in different chapters of the Qur’an. The fifth chapter analyzes metaphors that are found in twenty-five Qur’anic verses. Each type of conceptual metaphor is first defined, followed by five examples from Qur’an. These metaphors are identified and analyzed with reference to Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The sixth chapter presents a discussion and a conclusion of the study derived from the analysis carried out in the previous chapter. It also introduces the significance of this study and discusses some recommendations for further research.
