Abstract: The main objective of this study was to investigate the response of young guava plants to some legumes used as cover crops, namely alfalfa, lablab and fenugreek. Growth parameters (plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, fresh and dry weights of leaves and stems, and leaf area) and nutrient status of guava plants were determined.
Generally the results revealed that intercropping of legume cover crops with young guava plants exerted varied impacts on the overall growth parameters recorded. Greater reduction in the values of the recorded growth parameters were associated with guava plants intercropped with alfalfa cover crop compared to the other treatments. Intercropping of fenugreek as a cover crop with guava plants resulted in the greatest increases in the values of the overall growth parameters, followed by lablab plants and then the control.
Higher leaf- N content was detected in guava plants intercropped with the leguminous crops compared to the control. The leaf- N content was highest on guava plants intercropped with fenugreek and second highest in the lablab plant and then alfalfa plant. No significant differences were recorded in leaf- P, K, Ca, Mn, and Cu contents among the treatments. Significantly lower leaf-Zn content was associated with guava plants intercropped with alfalfa compared to the control, and no significant differences were noted among control, fenugreek, and lablab cover crops. Leaf-Fe content was significantly higher in guava plants intercropped with alfalfa than the other treatments, which in turn, showed no significant differences among them. |
